"Teaching children to read is an essential part of their learning. Reading is a skill that helps to develop vocabulary and improve understanding of words. In synthetic phonics lessons, children learn the relationship between letters and sounds. Teaching them to recognise the sounds each letter makes and how to put them together, enables them to read. It also helps with spelling as they learn how to break up words into sounds, in order to spell them."  (Twinkl)

As a school we have adopted the DfE validated Twinkl Phonics Scheme which begins in Foundation Stage and continues throughout the school. Phonics lessons are taught predominantly in Reception and Key Stage 1. Key Stage 2 continue with Twinkl for phonics support and aligning their spellings with the whole-school scheme. 

As parents/carers there are ways to support children in their Early Reading as this is the foundation to support children with the rest of their learning.
Included in this page is support for parents/carers in understanding what phonics is and how it works, an overview of the whole-school scheme and the levels the children will be working through and a guide to what the Year 1 Phonics screening is. Additionally, there is information about how to use the Rhino Readers Books which are an essential part of the scheme and are used throughout the school.
